The Video Interview: Getting Your Best Take

We are looking forward to bringing a whole new type of interview into our recruiting process: the video interview! Using a tool called Spark Hire, we are changing the way we are conducting interviews for our Customer Service Agent positions.  So, if you’ve applied to be a Customer Service Agent, the interview process might be a little different than processes you’ve experienced previously.

We know being on video can be a bit daunting; in fact, Emily experienced this herself just last week.  So we wanted to provide a little more information about the interview as well as some helpful tips to make you feel calm, collected, and ready to wow the camera in your interview!  

The purpose of the video interview is two-fold.  First, we want to learn a little bit more about you, your experience, and why you want to join our team.  Similarly to a phone interview, we want to hear about some of your previous work experience and what made you decide to apply to work at GetYourGuide in the role of Customer Service Agent. Second, the video interview gives us the chance to hear what languages you speak and how comfortable you are speaking those languages.  For some of the questions, you will respond in English, but for others you will be asked to respond in the languages you provided in your application.  

The interview consists of eight questions and for each question you will have some time to think before you respond. This is unlike a typical interview, and the think time is given so that you can gather yourself and your thoughts before you start recording.  Even with the think time, we are still hoping for spontaneous answers, so please don’t worry about preparing a perfect speech or saying everything exactly right!  We want to get to know you! We know that it can be challenging to answer questions and have your answers be recorded, so don’t worry about stumbling.  

We also know that not everyone is comfortable taking a video of themselves, and although we guarantee that the video will be private and safe, we understand the hesitation. Therefore, if you would prefer to just do an audio interview, you can either place a piece of paper over your webcam or turn your webcam off and simply record the audio.

One of the biggest advantages of the video interview is that you can do it on your own time and in your own environment. We suggest you pick a quiet place where you feel comfortable with a good wifi signal to record your interview.  It should take about 30 minutes, so whenever you feel ready, just click on the link provided in the email, create a username and password, and start recording.  If you have any technical problems recording the interview, then reach out to the Spark Hire’s 24/7 customer support.  And of course, you can always reach out to us with any questions.  

Some important things to remember:

  1. Test your webcam and microphone before you begin recording. When prompted by Spark Hire, be sure to click “allow” so that Spark Hire can use your webcam and built-in microphone for the interview.

  2. Make sure to watch the Welcome Video, the tutorial video, and to record a practice video before beginning the interview.  Spark Hire has excellent tools to help you feel more prepared, so take advantage of them.

  3. Make sure to listen and read the questions carefully, as you will be expected to answer the different questions in the different languages you speak.     

We are really excited to meet you and to learn more about you, so don’t be nervous! We know that being on camera isn’t an easy thing, and we sincerely appreciate you taking the time to do the interview.
