8 Ways We Power through the Post-Lunch Slump
We’ve all felt it: the slight fogginess after returning to your desk, the inadvertent yawns, the occasional head dip...the post-lunch slump is an undeniable fact of the workday. Research suggests the slump is due to biological factors such as our internal circadian rhythm or overeating at lunch. However, just because we can’t rewrite our biology (or pass up that extra slice), doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to help power through the workday! Read on and find out how we get our groove back after a lunch break.
Duda Breseeg, Customer Service Team Lead: As a team lead, I walk around after my lunch break, I crack some bad jokes to my team. Very bad ones. For example, what do you call an alligator in a vest? An investigator. They get a little bit annoyed in a good way, and then I always end with, “Ok, let’s get back to work now.” And then we all get back to work.
Mike Silley, Performance Marketing Analyst: What I normally do to get through the afternoon slump (more like avoid the slump completely) is to indulge in some amazing ice-cream at Eis und Heiß. I can highly recommend!
Ignasi Baldellou, Sales Operations Specialist: In my case, i always need to go out of the office during lunch breaks. The sales team is pretty cool, so we always go out to eat something. My favorite lunch breaks are when we go to Centro Italia, not only for the food but also for the coffee (it's so good). The 5-minute walk to get there also helps me to relax a little bit. After that I am full of energy to get back to work!
Fernando Rumi, IT Support Technician: Here are my tips to fight against the slump after lunch: I usually leave the duties that require me to stand up for this time of the day, also drinking a tea and eating some almonds keeps me busy and entertained, and of course music, the headphones are a very important tool to keep you on the track.
Matteo Galli, Software Engineer Back-End: Espresso shot after lunch and a second one in the middle of the afternoon if I’m really sleepy. And some energizing playlist (including some opera music from time to time).
Beatrice Zwick, HR Working Student: My tip to survive the post-lunch slump is to drink a glass of ice-cold water after lunch. Additionally, I eat some nuts in the afternoon
Diana Martin, Spanish Content Editor: Something that has helped me (and Mike!) during the summer is going to Eis und Heiß, the ice cream shop down Erich-Weinert-Str.! Taking a short walk there and enjoying the ice cream in the sun is the best to clear your mind and recharge your batteries before going back to work... and who can say no to a sweet treat? My favorite flavor: Wiener-Mandel..
Jessica Fromm, Office Manager: Splash cold water on your underarms, stretch if possible, and catch some fresh air before you take your seat again. Overall it helps a lot to keep on the go and move a bit in between to not slouch and fall on your keyboard after 2 p.m. - drinking loads of water helps as well! So Stay Curious AND awake ;)
