Becoming More than an Engineer at GetYourGuide

Becoming More than an Engineer at GetYourGuide

Being a product-minded engineer is not for everyone, but if you care about your customer’s experience just as much as your code, then GetYourGuide is definitely a company for you. Here are 5 reasons why your first year here would be the best one in your career yet. By Nikita Belokopytov. Snapped here with his wife in Salzburg, Nikita is our Android Engineer, a libertarian and an avid gamer.

1. Welcome days

Basically the first thing a GetYourGuide newbie experiences are the Welcome Days. Why is it essential for your growth? Because during these days all departments in GetYourGuide take their time to thoroughly explain all sides of their craft. Ever wondered how the Finance department allocates and manages funds in a big startup? Ever wondered what Data Engineers do all day? After two days of presentations and comprehensive no-holds-barred Q&A sessions, you will have a complete overview of the business.

2. Cross-functional teams

In GetYourGuide all engineering teams are cross-functional. What does that mean for you? It means you will always have direct input in all sides of your product; be it a feature requirement, UI/UX tweaks or even setting a business goal! All engineers here have responsibility not only for quality of code, but also for the impact that their changes make. Do you have a good idea for an experiment? Your product manager and the designer are always there for you. In no time you’ll have an opportunity to develop your idea into a fully fledged and thoroughly designed feature that could completely change the face of the product and turn some customer’s trip into an amazing experience!

3. Tech-lunches and conferences

GetYourGuide can only evolve as fast as our people! Learning new disciplines and sharing new insights with your peers over lunch is not only encouraged, it’s a highlight of the day! A Tech-Lunch is not only about tech either - we have presentations on photography, product design and computer graphics. Learning is one of the fundamentals of the company - GetYourGuide regularly sponsors you for conferences for professional development, just don’t forget to share your experience with the rest of your team ;)

4. Clarity and Transparency

GetYourGuide firmly believes that great success is only possible with total transparency and clarity for everyone in the company. All internal documents and goals are shared and can be discussed. Have a question about a certain Objectives for business development? No problem - ask away! Global monthly updates make sure that everyone in the company is on the same page and that nothing gets overlooked. Reading a book about creating and maintaining an IT business is awesome, but seeing all the internal workings for yourself takes your career to a whole other level. A level that you can reach in GetYourGuide.

5. Hackathons

Creativity is very important for an engineer, but what GetYourGuide is good at is thinking outside of the box and channeling inspiration into a finished product. Regular hackathons ensure that no wild idea is left unexplored, no stone unturned on a path to become the next big thing. During a hackathon every engineer will be provided with everything he needs to work with a cross-functional team on a feature or a self-contained product. As with Q&A sessions - there are no holds barred. Basically it’s about delivering anything that will improve one’s travel experience. Even if your idea is very disruptive for GetYourGuide’s business model, you are still encouraged to implement and present it. Maybe you’ll be our next CEO!

Thanks to GetYourGuide, I’ve learned so much more about IT business in just one year, than I did in my whole previous career! I can’t wait to see what the future brings and how I develop in the next year. Onwards!
