Can you please give us a brief summary of what your job entails?

As an HR Services Working Student, I support our Human Resources department. This means I get to learn about and work on a broad range of topics like onboarding, employee benefits, process optimization, and coordination. I’m also responsible for setting up employment contracts and adjustments, providing contractual support and consultation to employees, maintaining employee files, documents, and paperwork, and helping with the onboarding process. One of my favorite tasks is managing our monthly Welcome Days — a two-day inhouse onboarding program for new employees. It’s great to be the primary point of contact for our international team, and I enjoy making everyone feel welcome.

Has your role changed since joining GetYourGuide? If yes, how?

I had ownership from the get-go and had the opportunity to develop and implement my own ideas right from the start. When I started at GetYourGuide, I began supporting our onboarding and offboarding processes and consulting with employees. Through doing so, I learned a lot about labor law.  Soon after, I was given the opportunity to handle all HR tasks for the Working Students at GetYourGuide. I am their dedicated HR support throughout their entire time here. Since I started, the company and my team have grown a lot, which has resulted in a shift of team responsibilities. Now, instead of taking care of a broad range of topics, we have one dedicated contact person for specific projects and the opportunity to gain expertise in one area.

How would you describe your team’s working style and dynamic?

Due to our team’s growth, the working style and dynamic within our team is constantly changing. It’s so great to see how every new person brings in new ideas, knowledge, and experience. What I value most about our team is our willingness to help one another. We take time to answer questions and make learning a regular habit. Although our schedules are quite busy, we find time to exchange ideas or just to just have a chat and a laugh together. Our regular team offsites and team and company events always bring us closer.

What does an average day as an HR Services Working Student look like?

We interact with people from all over the world who work in different departments and have unique requirements; therefore, no day or case is the same as another. My day normally starts by checking my emails as well as our internal service and HR tools. We then have a stand-up meeting where we update each other on our projects and discuss what we want to accomplish that day. Throughout the day I might work on onboarding new joiners, consult with employees, or tackle project-related tasks like our internal People Team Newsletter

What is the most challenging aspect of your role?

It can sometimes be challenging to juggle university with my work since both involve a lot of responsibilities. That being said, my team is incredibly helpful, and they support me as needed. I’m also given a lot of freedom to plan my working hours around my university schedule.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?

By organizing the Welcome Days, I’m able to meet almost every person who joins GetYourGuide. It’s amazing to get to know so many new people with such diverse backgrounds. Working so closely with our employees allows me to build long-lasting relationships with them, and it’s rewarding to be their trust partner.

What advice would you have for someone who would like to work as an HR Services Working Student at GetYourGuide?

Do not hesitate to voice your opinions and implement your own ideas right from the start. Studying and working part-time can be challenging and stressful at times, but it also gives you a great opportunity to apply your theoretical knowledge straight away and see it in action. GetYourGuide is a place where you are given a lot of responsibility and where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities. It’s a place that gives you independence and promotes proactivity. Having so much freedom in a Working student position has presented me with an outstanding growth opportunity.

What is your favorite thing about working with GetYourGuide?

This is an easy one — it’s definitely working with such great people. No one hesitates to take time out of their busy schedules to help others, and this goes for my own team as well as other departments across the company. Everyone is passionate and full of positivity, which is really engaging. I also feel very lucky to work in such a diverse team. The variety in people’s backgrounds, experiences, and stories is very inspiring.

Thank you, Madeline, for sharing your experience. If this sounds like an interesting opportunity for you, apply to join our team.
