Position Spotlight: Legal Counsel
Jasmin Tafazolli, Legal Counsel, left her role in the public sector to join our Legal team in January 2019. In today’s post, she details her role, her tasks, and the difference between working in the public vs. private sector.
Can you please introduce yourself?
I’m Jasmin, I’m originally from Austria, and I’ve been working as a Legal Counsel on the Legal team since January 2019.
Can you please give us a brief summary of what your job entails?
Since the Legal team is an internal service provider, I act as a sparring partner to all of the different departments at GetYourGuide who have legal requests. In this role, I meet a lot of different people and get to peek into the different functions at GetYourGuide. I’m also involved in long-term projects, which I find very rewarding. And, finally, along with my team, I build cross-functional processes from scratch. As Legal Counsel, it’s all about using the information you have to make a big impact.
What does an average day as a Legal Counsel look like?
An average day involves reviewing contracts, giving strategic advice on various topics like Intellectual Property, Data Protection, and Sales Processes to different teams like HR, IT, and Customer Service, organizing and structuring next steps for projects, and, since face-to-face communication is key, meeting and aligning with people from across the organization to fulfill their business needs. In short, my job is to do my best to make everybody happy, so they can proceed swiftly in their workflow.
Usually when I take on a task, there are certain aspects that might seem unworkable, but that’s no way to approach a problem! The Legal team aims to find solutions even if the problem seems unsolvable at first glance. Also, no day would go by without a healthy dose of prioritization. Since we are a fast-growing business, the workload is big and we have a lot of requests. Each of these requests involves doing research and getting input from different people and teams. It’s important to build strong relationships with internal stakeholders in order to find the best solution for everyone.
What opportunity for impact do you have in your role?
We give the green light to every development that happens as GetYourGuide. So, without the Legal team, contracts wouldn’t be completed, and GetYourGuide couldn’t expand. This means we couldn’t work with all of our top-notch partners to bring incredible experiences to customers around the world. My work ensures that GetYourGuide can keep growing.
How would you describe your team’s working style and dynamic?
The Legal team is currently made up of my manager, 1 paralegal, 2 working students, and myself. Even though we aren’t all working side-by-side everyday, the dynamic on the team and the connection between us is really strong. We discuss things while we work, share ideas, and give each other input.
What is the most challenging aspect of your role?
It’s exciting to work on many projects and requests; the challenge is to stay organized and retain an overview of the tasks. Since I support a various number of departments and a colorful range of topics, it is important to keep a cool head and not over-complicate things, but rather keep it simple and solution-oriented. I’m looking forward to the team’s growth, so we can support the company and each other even better.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?
People here are really grateful for everything I do for them. Once I’ve given good input, reviewed a contract, or concluded a process, both the internal and external stakeholders are appreciative of all of my hard work.
In moving from the public sector to private sector, what additional skills have you had to develop?
In the private sector, and more specifically at a startup, you have the chance to shape or reshape a lot of structures, and fast. Within the public sector, this can be either impossible or very slow-moving. So, here, I’ve had to learn how to work faster, adapt to change, and be a driver of change.
What advice would you have for someone who would like to work as a Legal Counsel at GetYourGuide?
Get to know your internal stakeholders, understand what is important for each team, and use this knowledge and your network to your advantage. Knowing what each team values helps you prioritize your own workflow and maintain a good network. Communication and flexibility are also very important. We see things from different points of view and find creative solutions to problems. Finally, given our team dynamic, it’s important to be reliable and eager to help others.
What is your favorite thing about working with GetYourGuide?
I really enjoy how easy-going and laid-back people are. Everyone at GetYourGuide works with full dedication, but they don’t let any stress spill into their environment or conversations. Positive people create a positive environment and vice-versa.
